In just 6 days one of the most prestige and most difficult Downhill races in the world the Lauberhorn race is taking place this year again. This is the 93rd time on Friday, January 13 – Sunday, January 15.

It is the longest downhill run in the Ski World Cup. Here are some interesting facts about this most prestigious Lauberhorn race:

  • 1930 the first 1st International Lauberhorn Race took place in Wengen and from there onwards it won in popularity around the globe and since ever then the athletes had the highest respect for this high caliber and demanding race.
  • At 4,415 meters, the Lauberhorn Downhill is the longest run on the FIS World Cup Tour. On skis, it takes over 2.5 minutes to complete the course. On top of that, it is the course with the highest speeds ever recorded, including the unofficial record of Frenchman Johan Clarey, who reached a speed of 161.9 km/h here in January 2013.
  • Preparing the slopes takes a lot of manpower with several almost 2000 Staff members who are working day and night in the previous week to secure fantastic slope conditions. This is to make the slopes safe for the athlete and prepare the best possible conditions for the broadcast and the spectators so that the Lauberhorn race is kept true to its name as it is one of the 5 most spectacular races in the world next to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy; Kitzbühel, Austria; St. Moritz, Switzerland; Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

This year’s race Lauberhorn race will be a very special one for all of us.

The Bernese Beat Feuz (35 years old) from Schangnau in nearby Emmental is for sure one of the greatest ski racers of all time and just recently announced his retirement. He will give his last debut at the last 2 races with the Lauberhorn race on his ‘home turf’ and the Classic Kitzbühl race this year.

The fact that Beat Feuz will race the Lauberhorn for the last time in his career, this year’s Lauberhorn race will get even more glamour and attention worldwide.

In his professional career, Beat Feuz has won three medals at World Championships and three at the Olympic Games. In 2017, he became the world champion in St. Moritz, and in February of this year, he won Olympic gold in Beijing.

He triumphed three times each at the Lauberhorn & Hahnenkamm downhill race. Of course, we at Buri Sport will x-fingers for our Champ and will cheer at the race line for him! For sure Beat Feuz is a legend a hero who will be sorely missed in ski race sports worldwide.

Just one more fact – An average skier can’t ski the FIS World Cup slopes at the moment as they are set up for the races. Even expert skiers will have a hard time skiing them easily that’s because these downhill racecourses are mostly made of pure ice, not just regular snow. If one loses edge grip here, it automatically means a scarily fast descent into the safety nets…

Stay alert and don’t miss out on the latest news for the race here.
